The fun never ends...

(Does anyone know a way to send this to Russell Monroe? There are three "mailto:" addresses on the site - for booking Monroe for an event, obtaining press releases and such, or ordering merchandise - but no way to just send something to him.)

I uploaded my clip!
I just uploaded my clip for momentum of me spinning fire (momentum.dv) to the ftp site.

Does that look okay? I have more video of me spinning without saying anything that I can upload and record an mp3 separately, if that'd be better.

Unrealistic deadlines don't do anyone any good at all, so let's just open it up. When do people realistically expect that they can provide their contribution? Early August?

My biggest concern was that as time and other constraints popped up, people would simply forget about this project; basically, at this point, I suspect that finding new people to take over for those who have backed out will be difficult.

With regards to other people's projects, I think ours is much larger in terms of the organizational overhead; most of us are far apart from one another, and we're actually trying to adhere as closely as possible to the original material. Anyway, I hope people are still excited about the idea.

Due to personal reasons, I'm unable to do my part either - since I'm a secondary I hope it's not a problem. It's partially because it's a partner-piece and timing has been terrible (if it was just me that had to do it, it would have been fine).

Sorry! Sticking around for the final product though - very excited.

Uh, somehow I completely missed the post about deadlines. So, sorry to say, there is no way I can get to an amusement park by then. I'll be going in the next couple of weeks, but I'm really sorry I can't do it any sooner. I'll still do it though!

With all the people saying sorry though, might I suggest we extend this a little?

Switching to secondary
Hey all, I am not going to make tomorrow's deadline, but can do it on Sunday with the cockroaches. Turning myself into a spider didn't happen. I was going to get 2 prs of red tights, stuff them, hook them to my body (also dressed in red) and jump around.

But yeah. Cockroaches. Sunday.
So I'm calling myself secondary now just in case the original secondary has already done their part. I don't want production held up because I couldn't come through.

so my friend's video camera is MIA so i can't do my part...sorry guys :-(

Did the uploader forget to post a link to let everyone know, or have we been beaten to our goal?

I just moved so I don't have the internet at my new apartment yet. So I'll try to upload my vid as soon as I get connected.

Hey everyone,

I'm deeply, truly sorry, but due to my abysmal health, I'm going to be unable to participate in the filming project.

Thank you for the opportunity, though! I'm still very excited to see how this will turn out.

FTP site open
Okay folks! Sorry for the delay, the FTP dump site is now up and running:

Look at that nice secure password! ;>

Anyway, there's the dump bin. Folks are welcome to send whatever they like relating to the project there, though I do ask folks to behave. Don't make us not be able to have nice things. =P

So what do we need to do with our videos of ourselves? I don't really know if that has been established. Are we giving them to someone to mix and master or what? I don't have video editing software, so the best I can do is just send someone my vid.

project updates
I'm sorting through the claims; due to adequate interest, I'll probably start a "tertiary" column, because claim comments were posted across multiple entries, and some people posted claims in posts to the community. I think the only one left unclaimed is "MC Hammer slide girl".

I'd like to stress that all submissions are valued, and I'd really like to make all the submissions available for download.

Another task I'm planning for later today is to post the line-by-line matching, so people can compare the singing pitch (e.g. so people sing "I love weird pillow talk" like "I love hot magma"; "I love your sister" like "I love the giant squids"). We may just opt to ask people to re-dub lines if necessary, to match "relative pitch" from clip to clip.

This could be useful...
The Discovery Channel's website has a page where you can download things relating to "Boom-de-ya-dah". You can watch the video, download a (zipped) MP3 of the audio, download wallpaper, or even get ringtones for your phone. The MP3, in particular, might be useful for keeping everybody in synch.

I've made a web-based drop box space for audio recordings... plenty of space

Need to log in by lj/openid/aim/wordpad etc to upload, and downloads are visible to all.

I'm surprised the xkcd forums don't publish openid yet...

and now some sleep before I go insane.

singing key
The original was in C#... but it was kind of suggested in a previous thread that we should do it in C (one semitone lower) as it makes it a lot easier for people to play instruments and work bits out on a piano and stuff...

What are people's thoughts on that?

I think any vocals can be tuned without making them sound too much like chipmonks...?

Who is going to do the final video edit anyway?
7:24 pm
audio backing track

I've quickly thrown this together as a basis for a backing track... Its got a horrible midi strings part on it which would be great to replace with real strings, and the choirs AAAs would sound better if they were (at least mixed in with) real people.. and of course it need choirs of boomdeyadas..

...I wonder if we could each record a chorus in time and then we could mix them together to get some choir choruses?

Anyway here is the rough track:

7:57 am
If there's a decision to do large groups singing the chorus (as gfish suggested), I can do the organization in Madison, WI. We've got a good-sized XKCD fanbase here. I think it'd be awesome to film a group of us singing the chorus with fireworks in the background.
6:31 am
I must apologize...
While I absolutely love what this community is set up to do (I love the original video, and I love XKCD), I won't be participating after all. Alas, I let my heart make promises my wallet can't keep :-(
There's just no way I can produce any sort of video. But I'll continue to read about what everyone is doing, and when the finished video is up on YouTube, I'll email it to everyone I know, and (of course) also post it to my LiveJournal. Sorry, everyone... *sigh*

Secondary 00: prelude
My sister beyondcrazy4you and I can do the secondary prelude. I was wondering if you think it would be cool for us to be looking at the xkcd website rather then the earth?

also my sister and I are a bunch of choir nerds and can attempt to round up a group of singers to record some Boom de yadas.
